Southgate encourages apprentices to think beyond football

Mon 21st Mar 2011 | Football Industry Events

League Football Education (LFE) and the Dame Kelly Homes Legacy Trust (DKH) hosted a joint event ylast week at Reading Football Club to encourage apprentice footballers and elite athletes to think about their futures and alternative careers – whether inside or outside of sport.

Some 400 apprentices from football clubs across the south attended, where Gareth Southgate and Dame Kelly Homes spoke to them about Creating a Legacy for themselves.

Only around 20 per cent of apprentices are offered a contract at the end of their apprenticeship. And this number falls even more dramatically after the first year.

Gareth Southgate spoke to the apprentices about this difficult predicament and how important it is to invest in themselves. He explained that even footballers who escape injury and manage to play professional football for 15 years will still need a second or even a third career when they can no longer play.

Given the current economic climate, the opportunity to meet potential employers has never been so important. Southgate explained that the apprentices’ future careers could come out of the event.
