Premier League calls for introduction of goal-line technology

Mon 23rd May 2011 | IT & Technology

Goal-line technology could be introduced for the 2012-2013 season according to Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore.

Scudamore told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme: "We'd like it now, and the good news is FIFA is now prepared to listen.

"We feel the technology is there, we should be able to use it."

The use of goal-line technology has been fiercely debated over the last few years, with calls for its introduction intensifying following last years World Cup which saw a ‘goal’ by England midfielder, Frank Lampard wrongly ruled out.

FIFA has now softened its stance on the issue and revealed it was putting in place a rigorous testing programme to find out whether the technology is viable.

Crucially, the International FA Board (IFAB) will be presented with the findings of the tests in July 2012 to decide whether it can be introduced in time for the World Cup in 2014.

Scudamore added: "It's gone on far too long, it's an embarrassment to us as football administrators.

"It's just a question of how we can persuade FIFA it can be done.

"I would like to have it the season after next - next season is too early but certainly the season after next, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't."
