Come on you greens!

Tue 23rd Aug 2011 | IT & Technology

The search is on for the devoted football fan likely to travel the most miles by road following their club this season.

Their reward will be a free LPG conversion for their car – which means they will benefit from cheaper, more environmentally friendly, fuel.

Loyal supporters have been dealt a double blow with the rise in both ticket and petrol prices but by slashing their fuel bills by 40 per cent, some fans will save the price of their season ticket and be able to afford a few pies, pints and cups of Bovril on top.

The free conversion offer is being made by mintLPG, one of the UK’s leading LPG experts. Their online conversion calculator will predict the savings fans can make per season by switching to LPG – a nifty reward for supporters travelling to home and away games.

The fan who tops the league will receive a free conversion.

“We’re not sure whether it will be a member of Plymouth’s Green Army, Newcastle’s Toon Army or a Manchester United diehard who travels from London to Old Trafford,” said mintLPG’s technical director Edward Davies.

“Even if your team is getting hammered every week, at least you can say the miles you have travelled to watch them have been cleaner and greener.”

And fans won’t have to worry about finding somewhere to fill up as LPG is now available at 1,500 filling stations across the UK.

Edward added: “It’s also good news for friends who travel with you as they will contribute less to fuel costs.

“Conversions can also increase the value of your car and you might be able to save on insurance premiums too.”

Visit www.mintlpg.co.uk for the savings calculator and football fans can enter the conversion challenge by completing the online form at www.mintlpg.co.uk/football.php

The closing date is October 1, 2011. Fans who make the competition shortlist will be asked to supply evidence based on match attendance last season i.e. match ticket stubs, matchday programmes and proof of likely attendance of matches this season i.e. season tickets or supporters club/away travel club membership.

mintLPG has compiled some examples of imaginary away trips to highlight the cost savings available:

Newcastle United v Aston Villa - distance 415 miles (return)

Using a vehicle average of 30 mpg (e.g. Ford Focus) would cost on petrol £84.78 (£1.35 p/l) and on LPG £52.34 (.75 p/l), a saving of £32.45.

Norwich City v Swansea City – distance 620 miles (return)

Using a vehicle average of 25 mpg (e.g. 5 series BMW) would cost on petrol £152 (£1.35 p/l) and on LPG £93.83 (.75 p/l), a saving of £58.17.

Blackburn Rovers v Chelsea – distance 454 miles (return)

Using a vehicle average of 20mpg (e.g. a BMW X5), this journey would cost on petrol £139.13 (£1.35 p/l) and on LPG £85.88 (.75 p/l), a saving of £53.25.
