Houllier adds his expertise to European Forum

Tue 21st Feb 2012 | Football Industry Events

Former Liverpool, Olympique Lyonnais and Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier has been announced as the latest addition to the player and coach development debate at next month’s Soccerex European Forum.

Houllier will join Stuart Pearce and David Sheepshanks to discuss player and coach development structures across Europe with a focus on England’s new domestic initiatives including the National Football Centre (NFC) and the new Elite Player Performance plan (EPPP). The session will also consider how UEFA’s new Financial Fair Play (FFP) policy will affect player and coach development across the continent. With a look at how England’s European counterparts tackle player development, Houllier will provide unique insights from his time working with the French Football Federation at its national academy at Clairefontaine which, under his guidance,  produced leading stars such as Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka and William Gallas.

Soccerex CEO Duncan Revie said: “Gerard’s work as coach for club and country, and his time as part of FIFA’s Technical Committee make him perfectly positioned to discuss the fundamentals of player development. His views on talent identification, nurturing and technical development make this a must-attend session for anyone interested in the subject.”

Player and coach development is just one of a number of topics being discussed at this year’s event, which takes place in Manchester from March 28-29. Other subjects include UEFA’s centralisation of media rights, the art of management presented by Rafael Benitez, betting in football with consideration to the issue of match fixing, club ownership and financial management with regard to FFP. The changing landscape of football sponsorship and a session looking at the turbulent relationship between football and the media is also on the agenda.
