Final Phase of Goal Line Technology Testing to Begin

The final phase of testing on Goal Line Technology (GLT) will take place later this month FIFA have announced.

The news will come too late for Tottenham, who saw a goal awarded to Chelsea in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat at Wembley, which replays showed had clearly not crossed the line.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), the game’s rule making body received the general evaluation of eight available GLT systems by EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology). The first phase of GLT testing was conducted between November and December 2011.

Of the eight companies, two companies, Hawk-Eye and GoalRef - following the set criteria and recommendation by EMPA - were approved by the IFAB to take part in the second phase of testing.

The second test phase will rigorously assess the reliability and accuracy of each system, as well as how robust the technology is before either can be sanctioned for use in competitive fixtures at a meeting on 2nd July.

FIFA said in a statement: ‘The latest planning meeting for test phase two was held on Friday, and the second phase of tests will commence before end of April, and will continue throughout May.’

IFAB must be satisfied with the speed and accuracy of Hawk-Eye or GoalRef before high-tech aids for referees can be deployed in football for the first time.

A statement by the Football Association read; "The FA has led the calls at IFAB for the introduction of Goal Line Technology for over a decade, and we reiterate our desire to see it introduced as soon as possible.

"No other single body has called as strongly for its introduction as The FA."
