Ukraine Still Killing Homeless Dogs

Mon 30th Apr 2012 | UEFA

The Ukraine has caused international outrage and condemnation over the brutal killing of dogs in preparation for EURO 2012.

According to animal welfare group PETA, the call from the country’s environment ministry in November 2011, urging the country's municipalities to stop the killing has failed to halt thousands of homeless dogs from being destroyed or mistreated.

A spokesperson for PETA commented: "While Ukraine is spending hundreds of millions of euros building shiny new stadiums, it's the dogs living on the streets who are paying the ultimate price for the country to play host to EURO 2012 matches.”

The Ukraine will co-host the EURO 2012 Finals with Poland in June. In Donetsk, one of the four cities to host matches, investigators found evidence that dogs are still being shot, poisoned and hanged by so-called "street-cleaning squads".  Local activists estimate that approximately 7,000 dogs are being killed every month in the region around Donetsk alone.

The dogs who are not immediately killed are taken to municipal animal shelters, where they are left to languish in ramshackle enclosures in sub-zero temperatures with no protection from the elements. During their visit, PETA Germany's investigators witnessed emaciated dogs starving to death in a Donetsk "animal shelter".

“We urge compassionate football fans from across Europe to take action at PETA.org.uk to help end the massacre, which is currently tainting the beautiful game with the blood of thousands of innocent animals,” added the spokesperson.

The broadcast-quality video can be downloaded here. The video footage was shot by PETA Germany investigators in March.
