Rangers Newco To Start Life In Division Three

Fri 13th Jul 2012 | Football Governance

Scottish Football League (SFL) clubs have voted against proposals allowing Rangers to start the new season in the Scottish Division One. Instead the club will begin the 2012/13 season in Division Three.

Speaking after the decision SFL chief executive David Longmuir said, "Today has been one of the most difficult decisions to be made by all concerned.

"The decision has been taken in the interest of sporting fairness. I am comfortable that the Scottish Football League has made a very decisive decision.

"Furthermore, the Scottish Football League's only acceptable position will be to place Rangers FC into the Third Division of the Irn-Bru Scottish Football League from the start of this season."

It’s understood that 25 of the 30 member clubs voted against admitting Rangers into Division One.

During the meeting which took place at Hampden today, the 30 member clubs agreed to accept Rangers into the SFL but voted against the SFL Board being allowed to broker a deal with the SPL and SFA over new structures and procedures which would also include Rangers playing in Division One.
