Dundee FC Take Rangers' Place in SPL

Mon 16th Jul 2012 | Club & Country Competitions

Dundee FC will begin the new season in the Scottish Premier League after they were elected to take Rangers’ place.

The Scottish First Division runners-up were handed the place over Dunfermline who were relegated from the Scottish Premier League at an SPL AGM held today.

“It was agreed that Dundee FC would be invited to fill the space vacated by Rangers FC in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League,” read the statement on the SPL website.

Confirming the decision, Dundee FC released a statement on their official website, “The Club can confirm that CEO Scot Gardiner has been contacted by the SPL this afternoon to confirm that Dundee FC will be Club 12 and is to participate in the SPL Season 2012/13.

“A full statement from the Club will follow later this afternoon.”

The SPL will now work with the Scottish FA, SFL and Rangers to facilitate Rangers FC taking their place in SFL Division 3 this season.

Also announced at the AGM was the re-election of Ralph Topping as independent Non-Executive Chairman with Steve Brown (St Johnstone FC) and Derek Weir (Motherwell FC) stepping down as SPL Directors.

Ralph Topping commented: “Steve and Derek have given sterling service to the SPL as directors and we are grateful for all their hard work and overall contribution to Scotland’s senior professional football league over the past year.”

Duncan Fraser (Aberdeen FC), Michael Johnston (Kilmarnock FC), Eric Riley (Celtic FC), and Stephen Thompson (Dundee United FC) were unanimously elected as Directors of the SPL to serve alongside Chief Executive Neil Doncaster and Chairman Ralph Topping on the SPL Board for Season 2012/13.
