RAF Honour For Shrewsbury Town Chairman

Tue 17th Jul 2012 | Clubs Ownership

Shrewsbury Town chairman Roland Wycherley has spoken of his delight after receiving the huge honour of having the sports hall at RAF Shawbury named after him.

The chairman, who recently celebrated 16 years at the helm of the club, said it was a proud moment when he discovered the sports hall had been renamed the Roland Wycherley Force Development Centre.

Mr Wycherley said: "It is a great honour to have the sports hall named after me. It was a total surprise and rather embarrassing but it reflects the very strong links and the level of respect the club and RAF Shawbury have for each other.

"We look forward to developing our relationship even further in future years.”

RAF Shawbury took the decision to rename the sports hall as a thank you to Roland Wycherley for the close relationship they have established with Shrewsbury Town in recent years.

The club has made its facilities available for the RAF first team to play their Inter Services fixtures at the Greenhous Meadow for the last two seasons.

Captain Paul Shawcross RN also presented Mr Wycherley with a framed photograph of the Greenhous Meadow at the moment the club secured promotion at the end of last season on behalf of the Defence Helicopter Flying School.

Shrewsbury Town manager Graham Turner was again pleased to accept the invitation from RAF Shawbury to take his new-look squad for a three-day training camp.

The hospitality shown to the players and staff was tremendous, and the activities, although gruelling, were enjoyed by the players.

It is an ideal exercise in pre-conditioning and bonding for the Shrewsbury squad ahead of the pre-season friendlies and life in League One.
