Football Participation At Five Year High

Tue 18th Sep 2012 | Club & Country Competitions

The latest national results from Sport England’s ‘Active People Survey’ show that more adults are participating in football than at any time in the last five years, with the total aged 16+ playing at least once a week (affiliated and recreationally) increasing by almost 40,000 since 2007/08.

Current measurements have recorded that 2,184,600 adults are now playing, which is the highest participation figure since the start of the Active People Survey in 2005/06. That suggests interventions and programmes such as FA Mars Just Play, GetIntoFootball Officers and work within further and higher education are having a positive impact upon participation.

Sport England and County FA’s will continue to work, through the FA National Game Strategy and the Whole Sport Plan 2013-17, to boost these figures further. In the 20+ age group there has been an uplift of 178,000 partakers overall and this includes a large increase in the 25-34-year-old age group, which is a core target group for the Just Play programme.

Although 16-19 youth involvement is still down, it has grown since December 2011 and participation in higher education has increased significantly. The number of disabled people playing the game has also increased by 22% to over 120,000. The next findings will be published in mid-December.
