FA Submit Wembley To Host Euro 2020 Final

Mon 24th Sep 2012 | Football Stadiums & Facilities

Wembley Stadium could host the Euro 2020 final should plans to change the format of the competition be accepted.

It’s reported that the Football Association have put forward Wembley as the venue for the Euro 2020 final after UEFA president Michel Platini announced he was considering a change to the format of the tournament so that it would be played in cities across Europe rather than just one or two countries.

FA chairman David Bernstein is understood to have met Platini last week and registered the association's interest in Wembley holding the final of the European Championships.

Wembley will host its second UEFA Champions League final in May 2013 following the success of 2011 final which saw Barcelona defeat Manchester United.

"Clearly Wembley is incredibly highly thought of by UEFA and it is something we will probably push for," Bernstein said at a media briefing.

"UEFA want to hold the semi-finals and the final on the same ground, or in the same city and I think we would be on their shortlist - but there would be some strong competition."

Following The FA’s unsuccessful bid to host the 2018 World Cup, Bernstein insisted he would not wish to be drawn into a similar bidding process, but England would be keen to stage Euro 2020, though Turkey remain favourites if they are not awarded the Olympic Games during the same summer.

Bernstein added: "One of the major factors is whether Turkey get the Olympic Games or not. If Turkey do not get the Olympic Games then I think they are in a pretty good position to stage the Euros.

"If we believed there was a real opportunity of having the tournament here of course we would look at it.

"If Michel Platini's current views prevail and it becomes a pan-European competition, then the focus needs to be on the semi-finals and final."
