FA Chairman Presents Cheque To Bolton Club

Thu 22nd Nov 2012 | Football Stadiums & Facilities

Grassroots sport in Bolton has received a significant boost following the award of £738,807 to Horwich St Mary’s Football Club from the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity.

The club were presented with a Football Foundation cheque by Chairman of The FA, David Bernstein, at Bolton Wanderers’ home game versus Barnsley last Saturday.

Horwich St Mary’s Football Club worked in partnership with the Lancashire County FA to secure the significant £738,807 grant award from the Foundation towards the £978,807 project.

The funding will allow the club to build a brand new clubhouse, provide community and social facilities, two full-size football pitches, five youth pitches for Under-7 to Under-16 teams and three mini soccer pitches.

Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government (via Sport England), the Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 8,000 grants worth more than £420m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £520m.

David Bernstein, Chairman of The FA, said: “It gave me great pleasure to present the cheque from the Football Foundation to Horwich St Mary’s Football Club.

“The funding from the Foundation will enable the club to provide their junior teams with suitable facilities on which they will be able to train, play and develop. I look forward to seeing the end result in the near future.”

Lesley Allon, Club Secretary and Trustee of Horwich St Mary’s FC, said: “The development at the club’s home ground, Scholes Bank, was a vision conceived over ten years ago.  Since then, we have overcome numerous obstacles in respect of the site to now arrive at the time when the build is about to begin.

“None of this would have been possible without the financial assistance of the Football Foundation as well as the practical help throughout the process.  Thanks to the Football Foundation the present and future players at Horwich St Mary’s FC will have a facility that they truly deserve.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “I am delighted that Horwich St Mary’s Football Club has secured this funding towards what will be an excellent new sporting facility for the local community.

“The Football Foundation is committed to supporting projects like this across the country with money generously provided by the Premier league, The FA and the Government (via Sport England), who have been our core funders since 2000.”
