Premier League Clubs Expected to Approve Goal-Line Technology for Next Season

Tue 9th Apr 2013 | IT & Technology

FA general secretary Alex Horne expects Premier League clubs to approve the implementation of goal-line technology in time for next season when they meet later this week.

Germany company GoalControl have been appointed goal-line technology (GLT) providers at this summer’s Confederations Cup in Brazil and, should the technology prove successful, it will also be deployed at the World Cup finals in 2014.

Horne lauds the introduction of GLT and fully believes Premier League clubs will give it the green light ahead of the 2013/14 season at Thursday’s meeting.

Speaking to the BBC, Horne said, "I always thought it was an ideal piece of technology to allow into the game. The [Premier League] club meeting is on Thursday so I'm expecting it to go through at that meeting."

The Premier League met with GLT companies, GoalRef and Hawk-Eye last year to discuss the installation of a system that would provide assistance for officials at top-flight matches. The FA has since given its backing to GLT with the Hawk-Eyed system being rolled out on a trial basis in the friendly game between England and Belgium at Wembley last summer.

No observations from that match were made public however and Horne went on to say: “There are occasions [when GLT is needed] and we've seen them here at Wembley, we've seen them in World Cups, we've seen them 11 or 12 times in the Premier League this season alone. "So technology that says 'yes, the ball has crossed the line' and lets the referee know makes an awful lot of sense to me."
