Stockport County on the verge of extinction

Fri 9th Apr 2010 | Football Club Administration

Stockport County could be less than four months from extinction after the Football League today rejected their administrator's application to sell the club.

The Guardian newspaper has reported that after hearing from representatives of the administrator, Leonard Curtis, the League board – at its first meeting under the chairmanship of Greg Clarke – declined to hand over the club's share in the league competition to a consortium fronted by the former Manchester City forward, Jim Melrose. The league is believed to harbour concerns over the legitimacy of the bid's business plan and its intentions.

It is the second time Melrose has been turned away by the League, despite him having vowed to come back with a "substantially improved" proposal when his first was declined last December.

The threat to Stockport's long-term future lies in the fact that the League will not permit it to begin a second season in administration, potentially making it the first club since Aldershot and Maidstone United in 1992 to be expelled from the competition over insolvency issues.

"At its meeting the board of the Football League considered an application for transfer of membership relating to Stockport County," said a League spokesman. "The board was unable to approve the application as presented due to concerns about the proposed business plan and ownership structure.

"The League will now continue to work with the administrator to help secure the club's long-term future and would encourage potential investors to come forward as a matter of urgency."
