Franz Beckenbauer Kicks Off Gazprom’s ‘Football for Friendship’ Campaign

Fri 26th Apr 2013 | Football Sponsorship

Russian gas major Gazprom, official Partner of the UEFA Champions League, has launched an international social project called “Football for Friendship”.

The project is supported by one of the world’s most illustrious football players and coaches, Franz Beckenbauer.

The aim of the project is to promote essential values embodied by football with the younger generation, such as respect for other cultures and nationalities, equality and a healthy lifestyle through the love of sport.

Football for Friendship brings together boys and girls aged 10 to 16, and youth football teams from eight European countries – the UK, Germany, Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia and Greece. The children will work in four groups.

The first comprises 11 football teams from the 11 Russian cities which will host games at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, among them two teams from orphanages. The second group consists of football teams from sports schools and academies at the clubs which Gazprom supports, such as FC Zenit St. Petersburg, Chelsea FC, FC Schalke 04 and Crvena Zvezda Belgrade.

The third group will be formed from the winners of Gazprom’s children’s sports competition and creative contest «Flame», while the fourth group will consist of teams of participating countries in the gas pipeline project «South Stream» (Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia and Greece).

The culmination of the project will be the international Forum of children’s football teams, which will take place on the 24-26 of May in London.

“The support of the development of children’s sport is one of the priorities of Gazprom’s social policy,” said Gazprom Chairman Alexey Miller.

“Giving the younger generation a possibility to unlock talents and to instill in children love for healthy lifestyle means creating a secure foundation for harmonious development.

“Football is popular all over the world. Its language is universal, understood by all people, no matter which nationality, religion or race. Through Football for Friendship, children will experience the magic of team play and mutual respect, which are essential values for their future lives”

“Football is about fairness. It does not know any boundaries. And it creates life-long friendships,” added Franz Beckenbauer. “The Football for Friendship project has a lot to do with teaching kids to overcome national and racial boundaries, about a healthy lifestyle, team work, and winning and losing together. Instilling these values in children across Europe is a worthy cause which I am proud to support”
