Gazprom’s ‘Football For Friendship’ Plays Host To ‘Der Kaiser’

Tue 28th May 2013 | Marketing & PR

Last Saturday saw the first Gazprom ‘Football For Friendship’ Forum held in London for 600 children on the morning of the UEFA Champions League Final.

Kids from across Europe and the UK gathered for the world’s first international children’s forum for sport where Franz Beckenbauer took to the stage.

The Forum was held to coincide with Gazprom’s status as official partner of the Champions League and is part of their ‘Gazprom for Children’ CSR programme across Europe, which has spent over £550m on improving youth sport at a grassroots level since 2007.

It offered an opportunity for the kids to interact with Beckenbauer and each other, as well as engaging in an ‘opening ceremony’ style experience with football freestylers, flag bearers, dancers, bands, audio visual presentations and much more.

Franz Beckenbauer was in awe of the ‘ceremony’ and astounded at the way in which the ‘Football For Friendship’ Forum had been delivered to such a multitude of children and media:

“I think that ‘Football For Friendship’ is a wonderful event and I’m very proud to be global ambassador of this project. It’s great to work with the kids and the programme that Gazprom has created is fantastic. I am very, very happy to be the one to front it. After all, there is no better way to make friends than through sport.

“My sport was football so I support this game, and all kind of sports, because it’s a part of our lives. All of my best friends come from football. Pele, Bobby Charlton, Carlos Alberto – I met a lot of friends all over the world so it’s a perfect field for creating friendships.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea that Gazprom has come up with, to bring hundreds of kids from Europe and across the world together to speak to each other and have fun. In 50 years they will still remember what happened in London, being a part of ‘Football For Friendship’ and to witness the final.”
