African Goalkeeper of the Century” to speak at Soccerex African Forum

Thu 8th Aug 2013 | Football Industry Events

Cameroon legend and CAF Goalkeeper of the Century, Joseph-Antoine Bell will be speaking on the player development panel alongside Zambia national team manager Herve Renard at this year’s Soccerex African Forum in Durban, 1-2 October.

Having spent the early stages of his career in Africa before moving to Europe at the age of 31, Bell will be able to share a detailed and rare account into what it was like to develop and improve as a player in Africa, before moving abroad at an older age, compared to the modern trend of young African players who are moving to Europe at the start of their careers.

Bell spent the first 10 years of his career in Africa, playing for clubs in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Egypt before moving to Europe, where he played for French giants Marseille, Bordeaux and Saint-Étienne. He also enjoyed a successful national career winning the African Cup of Nations on two occasions in 1984 and 1988, being voted goalkeeper of the tournament both times, as well as playing in three world cups (1982, 1990 and 1994), all of which led him to bed named CAF’s Best Goalkeeper of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

Soccerex CEO Duncan Revie said: “It’s a great pleasure to welcome Joseph-Antoine back to another Soccerex event. Having previously heard him speak so passionately and knowledgeably about African football, he is a fantastic speaker for the panel and can provide an unbeatable insight into player development on the African continent.”

The Soccerex African Forum will bring together 1,000 senior football decision makers together with businesses from across the continent and the world for two days of unrivalled learning, networking and business opportunities to unite the business of football in Africa.
