Steve McClaren Unveils 500,000 Grassroots Facility

Tue 19th Nov 2013 | Football Stadiums & Facilities

Former England and Middlesbrough FC Manager, and current Head Coach at Derby County FC, Steve McClaren, has officially unveiled the outstanding new changing pavilion in Ripley for Codnor Sports Charitable Trust, that was made possible thanks to a £310,353 grant from the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity.

The new sports pavilion comprises: two changing rooms, each with toilet and shower provision; two officials changing rooms; a community room; a kitchen; a meeting room; a cricket score box; spectator toilets; and internal and external storage.

The new facilities will provide a much needed home for Codnor Boys Football Club, whose valuable contribution to the community has been somewhat hindered in recent years due to a total lack of local home ground facilities.

The club currently have approximately 200 players involved across 12 teams ranging from Under-6s to Under-18s playing in various leagues and competitions, including a disability squad with coaches working closely with the Derbyshire County FA and Derby County FC Sport in the Community program to ensure they provide quality coaching. In 2007 the club became a registered ‘Deaf Friendly Football Club’.

The club worked in partnership with the Derbyshire FA to secure a £310,353 grant from the Football Foundation towards the £505,084 project. Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England, the Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 9,600 grants worth more than £412m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £565m.

Across the whole of Derbyshire, the Foundation has awarded 92 grants worth £8m towards grassroots sports projects worth nearly £16m.

Steve McClaren said: “This stunning new changing pavilion is great news for football in the area. Congratulations should go to the Codnor Sports Charitable Trust, the Football Foundation and the Derbyshire FA for their work in making it happen.”

“Building more high quality facilities like this is vital to developing the next generation of young English talent in our national game, so I am delighted to be here today to officially open the new site.”

Philip Moss, Codnor Boys Football Club Chairman and Trustee, commented: “Our project has, after many years of hard work, finally been realised: but without the fantastic financial and technical support from the Football Foundation and Codnor Parish Council it is unlikely it would have ever happened.

“We now have a facility we can rightly be proud of, and on which we can continue to develop and build our football club – a position we felt was impossible not so many years ago. A big ‘thank you’ to the Football Foundation!”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, added: “This is an outstanding new changing pavilion, which will benefit football and other sports in and around Codnor. Developing new grassroots facilities, such as this, is essential to increasing the number of people who have a chance to stay fit and healthy through participating in sport.

“The Football Foundation is dedicated to improving sports sites across the country with investment from our funding partners – the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England. I congratulate Codnor Sports Charitable Trust and the Derbyshire County FA for their hard work on this project.”
