Wigan Unveil New Training Ground Plans

Wigan Athletic Football Club have presented plans for a new training facility to the residents of Charnock Richard, five miles north of Wigan, in the borough of Chorley.
The club purchased Charnock Richard Gold Club last year with a view to transforming the site into training facilities for its professionals and academy, the plan being to attain ‘Category 1’ status and thus become one of the leading football academies in the country.
If given planning permission, the plan would be for the training ground to be operational by August 2016.
The current training facilities at Christopher Park in Standish Lower Ground, Wigan are not suitable for this purpose because the site is not large enough.
Wigan had considered the possibility of locating the training facilities for the professionals and the academy on separate sites – a strategy that was pursued last year. However, the Charnock Richard golf course is deemed large enough to provide all the facilities required.
The proposals exhibited are designed to meet the requirements of the Premier League and Football League for a Category 1 Academy.
Wigan Chief Executive, Jonathan Jackson, commented, “This is the most exciting project the club has been involved in since the building of the then JJB Stadium, now DW Stadium, in 1999.
“We feel that the site is perfect in terms of being able to provide the club with an infrastructure to grow into the future, and provide a Premier League facility for generations to come.”
