Messy or Messiah?

Wed 9th Jul 2014 | World Cup 2014

The first semi-final broke all kinds of records; it was the first time Brazil had been beaten at home since 1975 and was the worst defeat in their footballing history.

Ironically no one has scored five in a semi-final since Brazil beat France 5-2 in 1958.

Netherlands play Argentina to decide the second World Cup finalist tonight and Airton Risk, a division of Paddy Power PLC, take a look at some of the numbers.

When one of the best players in the world is on show, a nation expects. Lionel Messi has scored four goals in five matches at this World Cup and won Man of the Match (MOTM) in each game he has played. He is a 33.33% chance to win MOTM tonight.

Messi still has high hopes for the Golden Boot, 24 of the 28 previous World Cup top scorers have at least made it to the last four. Leo Messi has a 25% to come out on top.

Holland have been World Cup runners up in 1974, 1978 and 2010. They were beaten by Germany in ’74 and Argentina in ’78 and with their two great rivals still involved they have a 20% chance of lifting the trophy.

Scoring has not been a problem for the Dutch so far, Wesley Sneijder has had 11 attempts on goal in this year’s tournament, more than any other member of the squad. He has a 16% chance to score anytime.

Arjen Robben has terrorized opponents at this World Cup, showing electric form scoring three goals in five games. He still has a 20% chance to be the top scorer in the tournament.
