North West Cities Set to Welcome More International Sportspeople

Wed 16th Jul 2014 | Football Industry Events

As the British Open Golf Championship gets into full swing on Merseyside, there will be a host of other high-profile sports experts arriving in Liverpool and Manchester.

The International Sport Business Congress, part of the International Festival for Business, takes place on Thursday, July 17, at the BT Convention Centre in Liverpool and Friday, July 18 at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Taking place as part of this year’s major UK business festival in Liverpool, the Congress focuses on the interplay between cities, brands and sport.

The North West is the home of several of the world’s most iconic sports brands and events and the Congress will bring the two sport rival cities of Liverpool and Manchester together for a spectacular programme of sports business leaders.

Working with the University of Liverpool, one of the world’s leading academic institutes researching and teaching the business and science of sport, there’s a world-class speaker line-up at the International Sport Business Congress.

Those taking part include:

  • §  Sir Howard Bernstein -  CEO, Manchester City Council;
  • §  Robert Elstone -  CEO, Everton Football Club;
  • John Amaechi OBE - Psychologist, organisational consultant, high performance executive coach and basketball legend;
  • Eniola Aluko – England and Chelsea women’s team footballer;
  • Jene Elzie - Vice President of Marketing and Communications, NBA;
  • §  Professor Sandra Jovchelovitch - London School of Economics, and author of a study on the favelas of Rio De Janeiro;
  • Dr Geoff Pearson – Football Industry Group, University of Liverpool;
  • Professor Stefan Szymanski – University of Michigan, author of Soccernomics;
  • Chris Grant, CEO of Sported and Vice Chairman of the London 2012 legacy programme International Inspiration.

Richard Morris, International Sport Business Congress Event Director, said: “We have got a fantastic line up of speakers and panellists taking part, so this is sure to be a very interesting event for people involved in sport business.

“The cities of Liverpool and Manchester have rich sporting histories and with the Open just across the Mersey at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, it’s fitting to host day one in Merseyside.

“As sport business comes into sharper focus now following the World Cup and getting set for the new football season, the International Sport Business Congress brings together the world’s best sports minds to discuss impact and legacy of sport in communities.”

The International Sport Business Congress is in partnership with both Liverpool Vision and Marketing Manchester, and the University of Liverpool, creating a unique event in a region where sport has achieved global success and recognition and where the business of sport is one of the key drivers of the local economy.
