Millwall & Prostate Cancer UKs Award Winning Partnership

Fri 19th Sep 2014 | Marketing & PR

There was joy for Prostate Cancer UK and Millwall FC as the duo triumphed in the Best Corporate Partnership category at the Third Sector Awards.

The victory, at the event at The Grand Connaught Rooms in London, came after a hugely successful 2013/14 season in which the charity and the Championship club worked closely on and off the pitch.

Up against AfriKids with Allen & Overy, FareShare and Trussell Trust with Tesco, National Literacy Trust with British Land and Support Dogs UK with JTM Service, Prostate Cancer UK’s pioneering work with the  club took centre stage.

Adorning a Men United scarf, Director of Fundraising Mark Bishop collected the trophy from comedian Marcus Brigstocke, with Millwall’s Commercial Director Alan Williams joining him on the stage.

And on a big night for the charity, they were also highly commended in the Communications Campaign category for Men United v Prostate Cancer.

Bishop said: “There were a few eyebrows raised when we begun our journey with Millwall in the summer of 2013, so this award is a source of great pride.

“We have forged an unbreakable bond with our teammates down at The Den in our quest to raise awareness of a disease that kills one man every hour, and it was an honour to stand side by side with them on the stage after collecting the trophy.”

Millwall FC continue to wear the Prostate Cancer UK Man of Men logo on the back of their shirts this season and Alan Williams was delighted to add a new accolade  to the Den’s trophy cabinet.

He said: “Our partnership with Prostate Cancer UK has been a breath of fresh air for the club. It’s generated great PR for both the club and the charity, and got Millwall fans talking openly about the disease for the first time.

“Collecting this trophy with our great friends from the charity means so much, and rest assured our relationship will remain strong going forward.

“All of our staff have got behind it and made the cause their own.  If we can help save just one man’s life it will have been all worthwhile.”

Andy Ambler, Chief Executive at Millwall FC, commented: “A motto that we have adopted at our club is ‘Football is the answer, not the problem.’

“There is so much that we do, and can do more of, which enables Millwall to be a force for good. We are a family club, and like every family we know many close to us who have suffered the effects of cancer.”

Many Lions fans at risk of the disease are now taking heed of the message and visiting their GPs with long-time Lions fan Terrence Bartlett recently writing to the charity to say that the messaging around the club had saved his life.

Bishop added: “This award once more highlights the powerful nature of football in helping us deliver our important message about men’s health. Football helps us to reach men of all backgrounds and our partnership with Millwall really made people stand up and take notice.

“Millwall are a special football club and we enjoyed a wonderful year working with them, but the fact our relationship still continues is a measure of the synergy between us from the dressing room to the board room.

“Of course, we must never rest on our laurels and there is no full-time whistle on our efforts with Millwall or across the football landscape.  Regardless of the team you support, we can all wear the shirt of men’s health and come together in opposition against the team we need to beat.”
