Sheepshanks appointed Street League ambassador

Mon 6th Oct 2014 | Marketing & PR

Former Football League chairman and FA Board member, David Sheepshanks CBE, has been appointed as an ambassador for the national football charity Street League.

Sheepshanks, who is currently chairman of St George’s Park – the FA’s National Football Centre, will support Street League’s work as it expands across the UK. He joins Manchester United striker Robin van Persie and Soccer AM presenter Max Rushden as official supporters of the charity.

Street League helps unemployed 16 to 25-year-olds get into work and training through an award-winning football and employability programme.

Sheepshanks said: “I am delighted to support Street League.  I am passionate about harnessing the real  power of football in our towns and cities to support young people to find their way in life and Street League do exactly this, making a genuine impact on youth unemployment.

“Street League’s innovative funding mix of public and private sector income really sets it apart as a sustainable social enterprise, and it is my ambition to help the charity receive the recognition and support it deserves on a national scale.”

Matt Stevenson-Dodd, Chief Executive of Street League, said: “Everyone at Street League is thrilled to have David coming on board as an ambassador. His name is synonymous with football, especially on the Coaching Development and community side of the game.”

Sheepshanks, who was chairman of Ipswich Town between 1995 and 2009, has extensive experience in business and charity. Current business interests include being a regional chairman of Coutts Bank and various consultancies include Onside Law (specialists in sports law), 21st Club (specialist providers of digital programmes to the sports business sector) and AGL (specialists in communication effectiveness).

In the charitable world, he is chairman of UK Community Foundations, the national organisation for the 48 Community Foundations, promoting local philanthropy and enabling funding support for community causes throughout the UK.  Previously he was a founding trustee and chairman of Suffolk Community Foundation (2005-2013) and the Ipswich Town Charitable Trust (1998-2009).

He was awarded the CBE in January 2013 for services to football and local charity, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of East Anglia in 2004 for services to the community and a Deputy Lieutenant of Suffolk in 2005.
