Facebook Launches Inaugural Football Awards

Fri 17th Apr 2015 | Football Industry Events

Facebook have announced the launch of its inaugural Facebook Football Awards in partnership with BT Sport and Mirror Football.

The new awards are the only opportunity for fans from around the world to vote on whom they think has performed best throughout the 2014/15 Premier League season.

Voting kicks off today via a dedicated tab on Facebook and through the Facebook pages of Mirror Football and BT Sport. Voting will close on Monday 11 May and award winners will be announced at a prestigious ceremony taking place in London on 26 May 2015, to be televised live on BT Sport 1, hosted by Jake Humphrey.

The Facebook Football Awards will allow fans a vote to decide who wins individual awards for Player and Young Player of the Year, as well as Best Premier League Club of the Year.

Fans are also invited to select a full 11 man line-up in the BT Sport Best XI award, ensuring that the Premier League’s star goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards are all individually recognised for their outstanding club performances this season.

Seven of the nine award categories, which also include Manager of the Year and Content of the Year, are decided solely by votes from fans.  The awards also shine a light on the extraordinary dedication of supporters, with the Mirror Football Fan of the Year award highlighting some truly committed fans, the winner of which will also be voted on by the public.

The evening will see a further two special awards handed out to a club and player based upon their performance on Facebook over the course of the season.

Glenn Miller, Facebook Sports Partnerships said: “The Facebook Football Awards are the only awards dedicated to celebrating the Premier League, where fans around the globe have the power to decide who deserves to win for their performance over the course of the season.

“That’s what the Facebook Fan Awards are all about.  We want to give the millions of football fans on Facebook the opportunity to share their knowledge and love for the game by celebrating the players, clubs and fans they feel deserve recognition.”

“We have established exclusive partnerships with BT Sport and Mirror Football who will be working with us on taking this event out to the community of football fans. By combining the power of print, broadcast and digital we can connect fans to more of the content they want and bring them closer to the players, teams and the game they love.”

John Cross, Chief Football Writer for the Mirror said: “Social media is a key part of Mirror Football’s offering, both in the way we deliver the latest stories direct to the fans and also the way we interact with fans online. Mirror Football has a hugely popular Facebook page and we’ve built up a real community of football fans who interact with our stories, creating a fanzine-like experience.

“At the heart of Mirror Football we are all huge football fans and that comes across in our passion for what we do. These awards are all about the fans so they are a great fit for us and we’re excited to be involved.”
