Tue 13th Oct 2015 | Football Industry Events

Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), FIFA, International Ski Federation, Tokyo 2020, Scottish Football Association and the International Centre for Sport Security to speak at top events-focussed conference on 9-10 November.

Influential figures from the world of sport governance and major event ownership will come together to explore vital bidding and hosting themes at HOST CITY 2015 Conference and Exhibition in Glasgow on 9-10 November.

Brian Cookson OBE, President of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), Sarah Lewis, Secretary General of the International Ski Federation (FIS) and the Association of Winter Olympic Sports Federations (AIOWF) and Alexander Koch, Corporate Communications Manager for FIFA, join a rapidly growing line-up of world-class speakers at the leading EU-based meeting of Cities and Sports, Business and Cultural Events.

Under the theme ‘Creative Innovation Connecting Cities with Sports, Business and Culture Events’ HOST CITY 2015 will boast a unique collection of city leaders and cross-sector rights holders, event owners and suppliers to explore the challenges and benefits of bidding for major global events.

Also present will be Hidetoshi Fujisawa, Executive Director of Communications and Engagement for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Organising Committee, Stewart Regan, Chief Executive, Scottish Football Association and Malcolm Tarbitt, Executive Director – Safety and Security, International Centre for Sport Security, who will all add crucial insight on major event hosting from both a national and international perspective.

They join other notable speakers who have already been announced and include:

  • Sir Craig Reedie CBE, Vice President, International Olympic Committee;
  • Louise Martin CBE, President, Commonwealth Games Federation;
  • David Grevemberg, CEO, Commonwealth Games Federation;
  • Simon Clegg CBE, Former COO, Baku 2015 European Games;
  • Antonio Fernandez Arimany, Director General, International Triathlon Union;
  • Kate Caithness OBE, President, World Curling Federation;
  • Janez Kocijancic, Vice President, European Olympic Committees;
  • Ed Wells, Senior Vice President and International Managing Director, WWE;
  • Josep Roca, Coordinator of International Affairs & Sports, Barcelona City Council;
  • Andy Preece, Director, Economics – Sports, EMEA+I, AECOM.

Brian Cookson, OBE, President of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), said: “Given the current climate around major event hosting and the impact of the Olympic Agenda 2020, I am looking forward to a fruitful discussion at HOST CITY 2015 on the ways global bidding processes are changing and the knock-on effect this might have on sports programmes within major multi-sport and single-sport events.”

Sarah Lewis, Secretary General of the International Ski Federation (FIS) and the Association of Winter Olympic Sports Federations (AIOWF), said: “As we approach our busy northern hemisphere winter season, which will see hundreds of events taking place across Europe, North America and Asia, it is important to reflect on best practices when it comes to staging large-scale sports events and what we can do as sporting organisations to ensure we retain a healthy interest from prospective bidding cities and countries.

“HOST CITY 2015, with its excellent mix of city leaders and right holders, will provide the perfect platform for this dialogue to take place.”

Matthew Astill, Chief Executive of Cavendish Group, owner of HOST CITY 2015, said: “In an increasingly competitive and highly scrutinised global market, event owners, whether they are in the sport, business or cultural sector, need to work hard to ensure their events remain an attractive prospect for potential hosts.

“HOST CITY 2015 aims to create an environment conducive to an open and frank discussion on the important issues facing major event bidding and hosting and allow those present to come together and foster new working partnerships in order to attract, build and host the greatest events in the world. We are delighted to be able to announce speakers of such a high standing in the world of sport and we look forward to the expert insight and unique perspective they will add to the debate.”
