Everton and Chang Beer have backed a campaign to celebrate Songkran and raise awareness of a Thai children’s charity.
Blues’ midfielder, Mo Besic recently helped the club attended a special event at Chaophraya in Liverpool One to help the club mark the Thai New Year of Songkran (13-15 April) and raise the profile of the Thai Children’s Trust, which supports children who have been left orphaned or abandoned by their parents or have fled a life of fear and hunger.
Mo was the special guest of honour at the inter-cultural event which saw Thai and UK children take part in a ‘Masterchef’ style cook-off.
Speaking at the event, Mo Besic said: “I really enjoyed meeting the children and cooking some traditional Thai food to support the Rice Bucket Challenge. They did really well and the food was delicious.
“I also got the opportunity to learn more about the Thai festival of Songkran, which was very interesting. On behalf of the Club I would like to wish everyone in Thailand, especially all of our Thai supporters, Sawadee Pi Mai (Happy New Year) and Sawadee Songkran (Happy Songkran).”
The sacred Thai festival of Songkran takes place this week between 13 and 15 April and involves a whole host of traditions, from colourful Songkran parades and religious ceremonies, to epic water fights, which are believed to wash away the sins of the previous year.
Everton and Chang Beer have joined forces to help the Thai Leisure Group, owners of Chaophraya, raise £50,000 for the Thai Children’s Trust.
The company will be donating five pence from every portion of rice sold in its restaurants and holding a series of other fundraising activities this year, including a virtual bike ride from the UK to Bangkok and special events during Songkran.
