Everton Young Chef’s Knockout Meal For Tony Bellew

Tue 17th May 2016 | Football Stadiums & Facilities

A champion Everton trainee chef cooked a knock-out meal for Tony Bellew at Goodison Park ahead of the boxer’s title-fight on 29 May.

Fifteen-year-old Bethan Disley-Jones from Irby, Wirral, got the chance to cook for local boxer and Evertonian Bellew before the Blues’ final game of the season against Norwich City to recognise her recent national catering award win.

Bethan, who was mentored by Everton’s Executive Head Chef Gareth Billington, has been crowned the winner of the 2016 Springboard FutureChef Award beating off competition from 8,500 other entrants from across the country.

To celebrate the award win and all of her hard work, the Club invited Bethan to cook Tony a meal ‘fit for a champion’ ahead of his fight against Ilunga Makubu for the WBC cruiserweight title on 29 May at Goodison Park.

Tony said: “Well done Bethan! What a fantastic achievement for such a young person.  I am proud to support a club which invests so heavily in young people on and off the field.  She has done the Blues and herself proud.”

Evertonian Bethan, who served Tony a medallion of Brazilian steak with Diane sauce, Dauphinoise potato and Haricot Vert and Vichy carrots, said: “It was fantastic to cook for Tony today, I never thought I would ever get such an opportunity.

“I was so shocked to win the FutureChef competition, it was such an amazing experience and I never dreamed I would do so well.  It has really inspired me and I hope to one day become a top-class chef.”

Everton’s Executive Head Chef Gareth Billington, said: “We have built a team of chefs at Goodison Park who have won numerous national awards for their culinary expertise. Behind this is a programme, which involves local young people being trained to become stars of the future in the kitchen, through initiatives like Springboards’ FutureChef.

“We have a saying we use here at Goodison – success is all about the second letter. Bethan is very talented and worked extremely hard to win this award, which is very much deserved.”
