Manager Dismissals At All Time High

Thu 26th May 2016 | Football Club Management

There were 56 manager dismissals across the four professional football leagues during the 2015/16 season according to figures compiled by the League Managers Association (LMA).

The figure exceeds the 53 dismissals in 2001-02, the year of the ITV Digital collapse. In addition, in excess of 100 professional coaches have been dismissed following a managerial change.

In total, there were 70 manager changes for the season with 14 resigning from their posts.

High profile sackings have included Roberto Martinez at Everton, Louis van Gaal at Manchester United and Jose Mourinho who was dismissed by Chelsea earlier in the season.

These were amongst the 11 Premier League managers to have been dismissed or left their positions. There were 18 changes in the Championship, 14 in League One and 13 in League Two.

Of the managers dismissed this season, their average tenure was just 1.31 years in the job whilst the average tenure of a manager across all the leagues stands at just 1.50 years.

Arsene Wenger is the league’s longest serving manager at over 19 years in charge of Arsenal. Second to Arsene is Exeter City manager, Paul Tisdale at 9.89 years.
