Richard Murray Resigns As Charlton Chairman

Mon 15th Aug 2016 | Clubs Ownership

Richard Murray, the former Charlton Athletic owner has resigned from his position as chairman of the club with immediate effect due to illness.

The news was released in a statement from Mr Murray on the club’s official website which read: “Over the past few weeks I have been having various tests regarding my health and it’s been discovered I have a number of malignant tumours in my stomach which require minor surgery at this stage.
“It is felt that I need to focus fully on my recovery so, with sadness, I am resigning my position as chairman of Charlton Athletic Football Club.

“I still have a great love for Charlton, which will stay with me always, although last season was very tough. I wish everyone at the club the best as we strive to get back to the Championship, and I look forward to returning to The Valley soon.”
Charlton Athletic owner Roland Duchatelet said: “I was saddened to hear of Richard’s poor health. Richard has done so much for the club and I know it was difficult for him to step down after being so intrinsically involved over the last 25 years.

“He is positive about his long-term prognosis though and all of us at Charlton look forward to seeing him back at The Valley very soon.”

Charlton Athletic CEO Katrien Meire added: “Richard has been a key part of this club for such a long time, and since I have arrived he’s been a great support to me, which I shall miss.”
