Safeguarding tops the Player Care Manchester agenda

Wed 1st Mar 2017 | Football Industry Events

How well sport is adapting its safeguarding procedures will be one of eight major topics discussed at the upcoming Premier Sports Network Player Care Manchester event.

Following the uncovering of historical sexual abuse in UK sport, all major sports organisations have been assessing their safeguarding mechanisms over the last year. In a panel session, leading names from teams and specialist organisations will discuss what was lacking in the first place, who has a best practice strategy others can learn from and what areas still require resource and investment.

Held on May 3 at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Manchester hotel, Player Care Manchester will see professionals from the UK player support network converge to discuss a number of current challenges facing professional athletes and their advisors, and debate how to overcome them.

In addition to the ‘Safeguarding from Abuse’ panel, sessions will include:

- Social Media Management - keeping sportsmen and women secure on social

- Player Retention - balancing player care resources between new and current players

- Athlete and Travel Security - ensuring players are safe when they’re on the move

- Working with Relatives - the relationship with a star’s nearest and dearest

- Media Training - enabling athletes to feel comfortable when dealing with the media

- Host Families - how clubs should recruit families to support young athletes

- The Agent’s Perspective - what areas of player care intermediaries need to get more heavily involved in.

Player Care Manchester will also host the Behind the Scenes Awards for the first time. The Behind the Scenes Awards acknowledge three individuals who go above and beyond in their off-the-pitch support of professional athletes in the areas of Education, Youth Development and Player Support.
