100 Most Influential People In Football: 100-81

Fri 31st Mar 2017 | Football Governance

To celebrate 100 issues of fcbusiness magazine, we’ve compiled a list of the 100 most influential people in the business of football since 2004.

fcbusiness launched in September 2004, and since then a lot has changed in football for better and worse. The game today is very different from what it was then, with new stadium technology, increased business and operational awareness and advances in player performance to changes in football governance and financial management.

But who have been the people behind these developments? We count down from 100 to 81.

100. Fabrice Muamba

Former Footballer

Bolton Wanderers FC

Muamba’s cardiac arrest at White Hart Lane in 2012 changed the way pitch side care is managed across football.

99. Delia Bushell

BT Sport

A determined new player in the broadcast arena. She has dared to be different in her channel’s approach to sports broadcasting by backing women’s and non-league football.

98. Dave King

Rangers FC

King took control of the troubled Glasgow club in 2015 but boardroom turmoil continues as they try to rebuild.

97. Thomas Hitzlsperger

Former Footballer

Various Clubs

In 2014, four months after retiring, former German international Hitzlsperger became the most high-profile footballer to date, to publicly reveal his homosexuality.

96. Henry Winter

The Times

An elite player amongst football journalists.

95. Sian Massey-Ellis

Match Official

Sian has proven gender should be no barrier to officiating at the top level despite being subject to sexist comments from Richard Keys and Andy Gray in 2011.

94. Wolfgang Niersbach

General Secretary

German Football Association (DFB)

The sports journalist turned General Secretary was subsequently banned for a year in 2016 following an investigation into Germany’s 2006 World Cup bid.

93. Kate & Peter Shippey

The Shippey Campaign

The Nathan Shippey Room at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light was the first of its kind in sport and was the result of their tireless commitment to create a comfortable environment where people with sensory needs could enjoy the live match experience.

92. Brian Barwick

The FA

The man who brought in Fabio Capello to manage the England national team but left after a fall out with chairman Lord Triesman in 2008.

91. Carson Yeung

Birmingham City FC

Yeung took control of Birmingham City in 2009, but following his arrest and subsequent jailing for money laundering, he finally relinquished control in 2014.

90. Henry McLeish

The former First Minister for Scotland published the Scottish Football Review in 2010 which called for the appointment of a ‘performance director’ - a role that is now filled by Malky Mackay..

89. Mark Bradley

Fan Experience Company

Has enlightened and informed attitudes towards the fan experience at many clubs, and introduced  the Family Excellence Awards which celebrates their 10 year anniversary this year.

88. Milan Mandaric

Portsmouth, Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday

Like Ken Bates, Milan Mandaric’s involvement in football clubs divides opinion.

87. Jonathan Ford

Football Association of Wales

Ford has overseen the growth of the game in Wales. Being awarded the Champions League Final and an excellent display at Euro 2016 are clear evidence of the progress being made.

86. Lord Triesman

The FA

Lord Triesman led England’s World Cup 2018 bid before stepping down following the Mail on Sunday’s ‘entrapment’ in 2010.

85. Barbara Slater

BBC Sport

Despite budget cuts, the BBC is still a key player in the competitive football media market, under her stewardship. She is also largely responsible for the increased programming of women’s sport by the corporation.

84. Stewart Regan

Scottish Football Association

Regan became the first Englishman to hold the position of CEO at the Scottish Football Association, charged with easing relations with the Scottish Fooball League.

83. Eva Carneiro

Club Doctor

Chelsea FC

The Chelsea doctor was reluctantly thrown into the headlines following Jose Mourinho’s critcism of her on pitch treatment of Eden Hazard in 2015. Carneiro later reached an agreement out of court bringing the hearing to an end.

82. Peter Lawwell

Celtic FC

With high fan expectations Lawwell has the unenviable task of ensuring Celtic remain competitive at home and in Europe, on a limited budget.

81. Marina Granovskaia

Chelsea FC

Russian-born Marina Granovskaia has acted as Abramovich’s senior advisor for nearly 20 years and now oversees the club’s player transactions.
