Blackpool fined by the Premier League

Fri 28th Jan 2011 | Legal

Blackpool Football Club has been fined £25,000 by the Premier League for fielding an under strength team for their game v Aston Villa in November.

In a statement released yesterday it was confirmed that the club had been found guilty of breaching Premier League rules which permit clubs to field their strongest possible sides in league matches.

“The Premier League Board has found Blackpool F C guilty of breaches of Rules B.13 and E.20 in relation to the team fielded by the Club in its fixture against Aston Villa on 10th November 2010.

As a result of this breach of rules Blackpool FC has been fined £25,000.

In reaching a decision the Board took into account the team fielded by Blackpool in its match against West Ham United on 13th November 2010 and in subsequent League matches.

The Board also considered the team fielded in the FA Cup 3rd Round tie versus Southampton FC and the Blackpool FC Managers' comments concerning the team selected for that game.

The Board was also mindful of the fact that as recently as 10th June 2010, following the introduction of the League's new Home Grown Player and Squad Rules, the Clubs considered but ruled out removing Rule E.20 and the Board is therefore committed to applying it in such extreme cases.”

Blackpool manager, Ian Holloway threatened to quit if the club were fined.

Wolverhampton Wanderers were given a suspended £25,000 fine by the Premier League last year after Mick McCarthy fielded an under strength team against Manchester United.

Blackpool now has 14 days to decide whether to appeal against the fine.
