Chelsea’s title winning team had the lowest turnover of players with the first 11 playing 85.5% of the total minutes of games for the season.

 

Research by CIES Football Observatory shows the turnover strategies followed in domestic league matches of the 2016/17 season by clubs from 27 top division European leagues.

 

Chelsea holds the record for the highest percentage of minutes played by the 11 most employed footballers at 85.5%. In total, Chelsea fielded 24 players on their way to the title.

 

Scottish Premiership runners up Aberdeen fielded just 22 players with the first 11 playing 84.2% of all the minutes played during the season.

 

Conversely, Europa League winners Manchester United, followed a radically different strategy with the highest turnover rate at 62.8%, fielding a total of 31 players throughout the season.
