Editor's Comment: Reflecting On A Decade Gone & The Future Of The Game

Welcome to the start of a brand new year and a new decade. First of all I’d like to take the opportunity to thank each and every person who has supported fcbusiness over the last year. We really appreciate your continued support. But onward we march.

As we draw the curtains on an incredible decade we’ve seen a huge amount of change across the whole of football – both on and off the pitch. Cast your mind back to 2010 and fan engagement was more likely to be a tactical term used by the police than a critical business strategy discussed at the highest levels of the game and social media was nothing more than a fledgling tool that many were dismissing as a fad or avoiding because they couldn’t figure out how to directly monetise it (and many still don’t!).

In the background many business processes were still labour and time intensive, digital automation and database management were still in its infancy, whist on the training ground, use of data analysis was still a long way from being widely accepted. And had anyone heard of OTT or thought we’d see football broadcast live via an internet based shopping website? Madness!

Over the last 10 years, things have developed rapidly, and during that time fcbusiness has tried to keep abreast of these developments to keep you informed and bring the latest thinking and ideas that have helped to progress the game not only in the UK, but across the world. In recent years we’ve extended our reach beyond the UK’s shores into Europe and across the globe in places like India, China and the US where football (or soccer) has really taken hold.

I’d like to think we’ve been influential in some of the change that has happened over the last decade, but we’ve merely acted as the vehicle to share your hard work, after all you are the forefront of the football industry, we are here to help share your stories so that we all see the tremendous continued growth of the game.

As I wish you well for the year ahead, I remind you to continue channelling through us your tremendous work and we will prosper together during 2020 and the next 10 years.
