Third-Party Ownership in the spotlight at Finance in Sport event in London in March as LaLiga President confirms attendance.

Javier Tebas, President of La Liga, Spanish football’s top domestic league, will be addressing the inaugural Finance in Sport conference to be held at the IOD in London on 7th March, 2018.

Never someone to avoid controversial issues, Tebas, who has been LaLiga President since 2013, will argue for a relaxation of the ban on Third-Party Ownership (TPO) of players which he claims may make it difficult for clubs to retain top talent.

Tebas’ presentation comes against the backdrop of a case on the legality of FIFA’s rule being heard at the Court of Appeal in Brussels and which has been dubbed ‘the new Bosman’. Whatever the outcome of the case, it is sure to make TPO one of the major talking points of 2018.

He will join a trio of top Premier League club decision makers speaking at this ground-breaking event including City Football Group Chief Financial Officer, Andy Young and Everton FC Director, Sasha Ryazantsev who will address new funding opportunities and player transfers, while Chris Anderson, Brighton & Hove Albion FC’s Head of Commercial & Legal, will also add his analysis of TPO.

The invitation-only event will attract chief executives, chief financial officers, chief operating officers and finance directors of governing bodies, clubs, leagues and event organisers from different sports and different tiers of the sporting pyramid.

In a packed programme of highly topical panel sessions, presentations and a wealth of networking opportunities, David Armstrong, Non-Executive Director of Premiership rugby club Wasps will advise on successful balance sheet management joined by Brentford FC Chairman Cliff Crown, a chartered accountant with more than 35 years of experience in advising commercial businesses.

Mark Catlin, Chief Executive of Portsmouth FC, will also offer a valuable perspective on steering a sports club from administration to stability on and off the pitch. Meanwhile the implications of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union will be analysed by Mishcon de Reya LLP Partner Maria Patsalos and Sheffield Hallam University Principal Lecturer Rob Wilson.

Speaking of the event, founder, David Bull, said: “We are delighted that Javier Tebas will be joining us at our Finance in Sport conference, and add the voice of LaLiga on such an important and topical issue.

“We have achieved a winning formula with our other industry-leading gatherings, so we will be applying the same approach with Finance in Sport. We will only invite those who work specifically in the sector, it will be free to attend and we will have a capped capacity to ensure an intimate setting for discussions about best practice.”

Finance in Sport will release further details about the event in the coming weeks. Please contact David on 0208 4191100 for further information.
