Stewart Donald has completed his takeover of Sunderland AFC today drawing a close to Ellis Short’s tenure at the club.

Confirmation of the takeover came at a press conference held by the club with Stewart and Charlie Methven this afternoon.

The £40m takeover sees US Businessmen Ellis Short relinquish his control of the club who start next season in League One ‘debt free’ after he effectively wrote of the club’s outstanding debt thought to be worth over £100m.

As part of the deal, the £40m will be paid over an agreed term after what Charlie Methven described as “a considerable cash requirement” at the club this summer.

The new owners will now look to appoint a new manager following the dismissal of Chris Coleman at the end of the season.
