First Team Data Analyst

 

Hours of work: 37.5hrs per week, flexibility
Location: Millwall FC Training Ground BR1
Responsible to: First Team Management / Director of Football Operations & Recruitment

 

Role Summary:
The First Team Data Analyst will be responsible for supporting the data analysis needs of the First Team. The successful candidate will work alongside the First Team Performance Analyst to identify patterns and trends that can enhance the coaching process and support the manager and coaching staff in their pre-match opposition analysis and post-match performance reviews. The successful candidate will also work closely with the other football departments to ensure the management and presentation of technical and performance data is to the highest possible standard, driving evidence-based and objective decision-making and ensuring a consistent and synthesised use of data across the football operation.

 

Key Responsibilities:
The role includes, but is not limited to:

Utilising data from multiple sources to produce dashboards, visualisations and reports that can inform coaching decisions (e.g. using Tableau or Power BI).

Creating and managing a data infrastructure for the First Team with a strong focus on efficiency and automation.

Maintaining and cleaning large data sets of both technical and physical outputs.

Developing data metrics that will enhance the performance analysis process.

Managing the First Team’s various data sources and databases, ensuring that all reports and data are captured accurately.

Working collaboratively with the First Team Performance Analyst, First Team Manager and Coaching staff to support match preparation and player development.

Ensuring the First Team is able to quickly adopt new technologies, data tools and methods.

Assisting with the production of pre-match and post-match review meetings and of post-match reports for the team and individual players.

Statistically comparing and benchmarking individual players in the first team squad.

Identifying and analysing playing styles, strengths and weaknesses of opposition teams, in addition to performance trends within our own team.

Tracking the playing time and performance of the club’s loan players.

Assisting the First Team Performance Analysis with video analysis as required.

Assisting with filming of training and matches as required, providing individual video and statistical feedback.

Sharing data, video and other content with staff, players and management.

 

General
Keep updated with best practise and methodology relating to data and performance analysis, as well as data handling and presentation.

Maximise all available resources within the First Team.

Keep confidential any information gained regarding the club and its staff.

Undertake any departmental and/or club CPD.

 

Essential / Desired Requirements:
Essential:
Numerate degree (e.g. statistics, mathematics) or extensive experience working in data analysis at a professional club.

Comfortable manipulating large data sets and performing various statistical analyses.

Experience using R and/or Python.

Advanced user of Excel.

Advanced user of Tableau/Power BI or equivalent.

Experience creating automated, data driven dashboards

Knowledge and experience of software packages such as Hudl Sportscode and Wyscout.

Outstanding data visualisation skills.

Ability to communicate effectively with staff members of differing technical understanding.

 

Desirable:
Experience of working with APIs.

Experience of database management.

Familiarity with programming languages such as Javascript, SQL or similar.

 

Personal Skills:

Ability to work irregular and unsociable hours as required, involving work outside normal office hours, evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays
