A Review Of 2024 Summer Transfer Window

The summer transfer has now closed in the Premier League which means clubs can no longer make any more signings. A total of £629.8 million was spent by Premier League clubs during the window, down 40% on the £1.070 billion splashed out in 2023.

Here is a look at some of the business done by the leading clubs during the summer.

Manchester City Make Big Profit During Window

Champions Manchester City spent just £23 million on their squad over the summer and made sales of £158,850,000, giving them a huge profit of £135,850,000.

One of the players City signed was their former captain Ilkay Gundogan. He joined on a free transfer from Barcelona and is set to be involved in their next fixture against Brentford. See the Paddy Power Man City vs Brentford betting markets for the odds on the German having an impact on the game. City are 1/7 in the match betting to win the game with the experienced midfielder in their squad.

The majority of the Premier League predictions from pundits this season have Manchester City as the most likely winners of the title in the 2024/25 campaign. They are bidding for an unprecedented fifth straight success in the league.

The club’s board will be delighted with the business they have done during the summer, as Pep Guardiola still has a strong squad to work with this season. It will help them meet their UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations (FFP) and ensure their club’s accounts are healthy.

Tottenham Make Biggest Purchase on Solanke

North London club Tottenham boosted their attacking options for the 2024/25 campaign with the purchase of talented striker Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth. The deal was worth in the region of £65 million, making him the most expensive signing by any Premier League club during the 2024 summer transfer window.

Solanke was one of the stars of the 2023/24 Premier League season, scoring 19 goals in the competition for Bournemouth. He was linked with several clubs in England and abroad during the summer, but it was Tottenham who won the race for his signature.

The England international made his debut for Tottenham in their 1-1 draw with Leicester City. Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou will be hoping Solanke proves to be a big success alongside Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Timo Werner in his attack.

Big Clubs Forced into Loan Deals

One of the trends from the summer transfer window was the amount of loan deals some of the big clubs made. They were forced into the loan market as they did not want to break the FFP rule, which limits the amount they can spend.

Last season’s runners-up Arsenal signed Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling until the end of the season. Blues manager Enzo Maresca had to cut down on his squad and a loan move was the only way he could get the England player off the Chelsea payroll.

Chelsea and Manchester United also completed a loan deal, with the Blues taking Jadon Sancho until the end of the season. Sancho was not part of United manager Erik ten Hag’s plans, and they were able to agree a loan with the West London club on the eve of the transfer window closing.

The transfer window will open again during January at the midway point of the season. That will be the Premier League club’s final chance to do business this season.
