Five Inspirational Footballers Who Have Battled With Addiction

For many of us around the country, footballers are our heroes. We stand on the terraces singing their name, we wear their name on the back of our shirts and see them as role models both on and off the pitch.

While we think footballers have it easy, after all, they’re paid millions of pounds to play a game we all love, it isn’t quite as simple as that. Many struggle with retirement, the responsibility of being a role model, the downtime that they have between training and games and the vast amounts of money, and it can often result in turning to the bottle.

That isn’t quite the case as much today, with a lot of support in place for players, but it is still an issue and one that has been a real problem for players who graced the pitch prior to the mid-2000s.

However, many footballers have suffered with alcohol dependence but eventually  got their lives back on track and provide inspiration to those of us who are struggling. Here are five players that have overcome addiction and got their lives back on track…

Tony Adams

Tony Adams, the legendary Arsenal captain, is one of the most celebrated examples of a footballer overcoming addiction. During the peak of his career, Adams struggled with severe alcoholism, often drinking heavily between matches while maintaining elite performance. Realising that alcohol was jeopardising both his health and career, he sought help and committed to sobriety in the mid-1990s. Since then, Adams has become an advocate for recovery, founding Sporting Chance, a charity dedicated to supporting athletes dealing with addiction and mental health issues. His story highlights that acknowledging the problem and seeking support can lead not only to personal recovery but also to helping others.

Paul Merson

Former England international Paul Merson battled both alcohol and gambling addictions during his playing career. Known for his skill on the pitch, Merson’s personal struggles were often hidden from the public until he spoke openly about them. After seeking treatment, he has maintained sobriety and has become a vocal advocate for mental health and addiction support in football. Merson’s journey emphasises that even those at the highest level of the sport can face serious personal challenges, and that recovery is always possible with commitment and support.

George Moncur

George Moncur, who played for clubs including West Ham United and Colchester United, has spoken candidly about his past struggles with alcohol during his early career. Recognising that his lifestyle was affecting his performance and health, Moncur committed to sobriety. He has since become an example to younger players, showing that discipline off the pitch can translate to success on it. Moncur’s story is particularly inspirational because it demonstrates that change can happen at any stage of a career and that it’s never too late to seek help.

Chris Sutton

Chris Sutton, the former Blackburn Rovers and Celtic striker, battled alcohol addiction during and after his professional career. Sutton has openly shared his experiences of the highs and lows of addiction, highlighting the impact it had on both his personal life and football career. Through treatment and support, he regained control and has maintained a clean lifestyle. Sutton now uses his platform to raise awareness about addiction in football, encouraging others to seek help without shame or fear.

David Cotterill

David Cotterill, a former Welsh international, struggled with alcohol and mental health challenges that affected both his professional and personal life. After reaching a low point, Cotterill sought help and committed to recovery. His journey to sobriety has been marked by openness about his experiences, helping to reduce stigma and encourage others facing similar battles. Cotterill’s story demonstrates that recovery is a process and that sharing one’s experiences can provide hope and guidance to others.
