FMDB Pro: Better Decisions Start With Better Clarity

How FMDB Pro is helping bring structure, speed and context to the earliest stage of football recruitment.

In football recruitment, the first cut is often the most important. Before scouts board planes, analysts open video platforms or data teams start modelling, clubs need to know which names deserve attention.

That is where FMDB Pro is seeking to make its mark. Developed by Sports Interactive, the studio behind Football Manager, the platform draws on access to a huge database built up over three decades covering more than 3100 competitions, 200-plus nations and 760,000 profiles across the men’s and women’s game.

For clubs, federations and football organisations, that scale is intended to help elevate recruitment processes and unlock greater market potential quicker.

“Early-stage recruitment can be too broad, too fragmented and too time-consuming,” says Richard Trafford, Head of Business Development. “FMDB Pro was created to bring that discovery work into one structured platform.”

For recruitment departments, that structure matters. A poor longlist can waste weeks on players who were never realistic fits whilst a sharper one gives decision-makers a smaller, stronger group to assess before the expensive work begins.

Who is FMDB Pro built for?

FMDB Pro is built for the people charged with making those calls: sporting directors, heads of recruitment, scouts, analysts, academy teams and federation talent ID departments. Each faces the same challenge in a different form – how to move from a global market to a credible shortlist.

For first-team recruitment teams, the platform is intended to make the top of the funnel more focused. Users can search by role and profile, compare players against peers using unique rankings to identify standout players as well as assess current and potential ability scores to test whether targets are realistic before moving into the platform’s integration with Hudl Wyscout when deeper video work is required.

These assessments sit alongside percentile rankings, giving clubs further context when comparing players across peer groups, leagues and markets. For clubs, the value lies in recruitment and squad planning.

For federations, it supports national team talent ID and player monitoring and for leagues and football bodies, it provides a clearer view of markets, competitions and people across the game. The practical questions are familiar – does this player fit the role? Are they realistic for our level? Is there eligibility risk? Is this a name worth watching live?

FMDB Pro is designed to help answer those questions before clubs commit deeper resources. Bringing context to comparison and deeper analysis Visibility remains one of recruitment’s toughest challenges.

Clubs may know familiar leagues in detail, but value often sits beyond established networks. With FMDB Pro, that wider lens is underpinned by Football Manager’s global reach, helping users surface players and staff in markets that might otherwise be difficult to compare. Crucially, that visibility is not presented as a substitute for judgement.

“The aim is not to replace scouting judgement,” Trafford says. “It is to help recruitment teams focus that judgement on better-qualified targets.”

That distinction matters as recruitment decisions are rarely made on one number. Suitability depends on level, role, trajectory, availability and fit. By bringing those factors together earlier, FMDB Pro gives clubs a more rounded picture before they move into deeper analysis.

The longlist remains one of recruitment’s most important pressure points. It is where the market begins to narrow and where poor early choices can become costly later in the window.

FMDB Pro aims to make that stage faster and more disciplined. Its search, comparison and benchmarking tools allow recruitment teams to move from a broad market to a credible set of options without losing the context that gives those names meaning.

“The value is in context,” says Trafford. “Clubs need to compare players and staff fairly across leagues, levels and markets, not just look at one isolated number.”

Reducing recruitment risk

In UK recruitment, eligibility can decide whether a target is viable at all.

“A player may look like a strong football fit, but eligibility risk still matters,” says Dave Whitby, FMDB Pro Product Owner. “FMDB Pro helps bring that consideration into the process earlier.”

FMDB Pro brings those considerations into the search process through GBE (Governing Body Endorsement) scoring, eligibility indicators and status badges. The tool does not replace legal or regulatory advice, but it ensures GBE eligibility is visible at the earliest possible stage, not discovered as a problem weeks into the recruitment process.

As every recruitment department faces the same pressures of time, travel and analytical capacity, FMDB Pro is designed to help them use those resources more effectively by narrowing the field before deeper work begins.

The platform has been developed to help teams protect their most limited resources so that scouts and analysts can then concentrate on the profiles that are most likely to matter and provide decision-makers a better foundation from which to apply their expertise.

Better clarity, better decisions

The phrase “better decisions start with better clarity” captures the platform’s promise. In a market where recruitment mistakes are costly and competition for talent is intense, the ability to see the field earlier and more clearly has obvious value.

“There are up to 250 data points across a single player,” continues Whitby. “We present this in the platform across a number of tabs starting with basic biographical data such as their name, age and where they’re playing now to unique data points such as spoken languages.

“From there you move into their playing profile, which covers positional data, their best role, preferred foot and playing style indicators. The attributes tab then gives you the full breakdown across technical, physical and mental categories, each scored on a consistent scale and benchmarked against the wider dataset using percentiles.

“Contractual information sits alongside that, covering contract length, estimated market value, wage and transfer history. We also have an injury tab which shows historical injury records including type, duration and body side.

“Finally, all of those data points are brought together in our Insight Reports, a structured written summary contextualised around your club, mapping the player’s profile, strengths and style against your squad and specific recruitment needs, so you get a qualitative read that is relevant to you, not just a generic assessment.

“Our advanced search and filtering, benchmarking, integrations and workflows are designed to support recruitment. However, FMDB Pro’s role is not to make the final call, it is to sharpen the starting point, reduce noise and give clubs a better foundation for the human expertise that still defines successful recruitment.”

For clubs, federations and football organisations working in an increasingly crowded marketplace, that clarity may be the difference between chasing names and identifying targets.
