In Focus/ Dallmeier - Smart Stadiums: The Future of Security & Fan Experience

In today’s fast-evolving sports and events landscape, operators face the dual challenge of providing a world-class fan experience while ensuring the highest levels of security. We spoke with Steve Hodges, Director of Operations at Dallmeier electronic UK, and an experienced video security specialist, about how artificial intelligence, edge analytics and fully integrated solutions are reshaping the way stadiums are operated and secured — both on matchdays and beyond.

Today we’re discussing how technology, particularly AI and edge analytics, is shaping the future of stadium operations and security. Let’s dive right in — how are these technologies being used in stadiums today?

AI and edge analytics are transforming stadium operations on multiple levels. From crowd management to predictive maintenance, AI allows us to process huge amounts of data at the edge — meaning right where it’s generated — without needing to send it all to the cloud. For example, AI-driven cameras can identify unusual crowd behaviour in real-time, helping prevent incidents before they escalate. It’s about enabling smarter, faster and more proactive responses — crucial in environments with tens of thousands of people.

How do integrated solutions like access control and intruder detection fit into this? Integration is key. In modern stadiums, we’re seeing a shift away from standalone systems to fully integrated security solutions. Access control, intruder detection and even facial recognition can now work together within a single system. For instance, if an unauthorised individual tries to enter a restricted area, the system can instantly lock doors, alert security teams and trigger nearby cameras to track the movement. It’s all about creating a seamless, layered defence that enhances both security and the fan experience.

On matchdays, you must face a unique challenge: balancing matchday safety with everyday site security. How do you approach that?

It’s a real balancing act. On matchdays, the priority shifts to crowd safety, emergency evacuation plans and managing large flows of people. But we can’t lose sight of site security — protecting critical infrastructure, VIP areas and operational zones remains vital. We use dynamic risk assessment tools to adapt security protocols in real time. Essentially, the system flexes depending on whether it’s a normal operational day or a high-profile event day. Technology helps automate many of these shifts, reducing human error and improving response times.

Lastly, how important is the management and use of video evidence in all this?

It’s absolutely critical. Video evidence serves a dual purpose; it’s both a real-time tool for managing incidents and a forensic tool for post-event investigations. Good video management systems ensure footage is high quality, securely stored, easily searchable and compliant with regulations like GDPR. AI also plays a role here — using analytics to tag incidents automatically, which speeds up reviews. Proper handling of video evidence can protect organisations legally and help drive continuous improvements in safety and security planning.
