LFC & The Red Way Secure Hat-Trick Of Sustainability Awards

Liverpool Football Club’s pioneering sustainability initiative, The Red Way, has taken home major awards for its ongoing work in building a better future for its people, planet and communities.

The Red Way (TRW) was awarded the European Club Association (ECA) Award for Sustainable Governance, which recognised the programme as a fundamental part of the club’s values that successfully addresses key sustainability challenges.

Notable achievements include 94% of the club’s operations running on clean energy and LFC Foundation supporting 123,000 people in 2022-23.

At the 2024 Sports Positive Awards, The Red Way received the Education and Training award. This accolade celebrates the initiative’s success in embedding sustainability as a lifestyle across all aspects of the club.

TRW takes a holistic approach, including executing many cross-club and athlete-focused sustainability training programmes that cover ethics, equality, diversity, inclusion, environmental sustainability and community engagement. It also actively encourages fans through activations to work towards sustainable living; including a 98% reusable cup return rate on matchdays.

The club also took home the Sustainable Packaging Award from the National Sustainability Awards 2024. Through The Red Way, LFC Retail has transformed packaging practices by replacing single-use plastics, reducing carbon emissions, and eliminating unnecessary packaging.

With 74% of its own-brand packaging now sustainably sourced, the club is making significant strides towards its 2030 net-zero carbon goal.

Rishi Jain, director of Impact at Liverpool FC, said “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do as a club, and by embedding it into all that we do, we are actively shaping a better future for our people, our planet and our communities.

“This hat-trick of awards not only celebrates our progress but also underscores our commitment to inspiring others as we remain the leading sustainability programme within world football.”
