Demand for tickets from Liverpool fans for Wednesday’s Europa League final in Basel has seen prices on the open market soar.

Liverpool prepare to face current holders Sevilla at the 34,000 St. Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland, on 18^th May. Such has been the rush for tickets at the relatively small venue by Liverpool’s global fan base, that despite Sevilla only taking up 7,000 of their 9,000 allocation from UEFA, the demand from Reds’ fans has had a big impact on ticket prices on the open market.

For the 2016 Europa League final, international fan-to-fan ticket marketplace Ticketbis.net have analysed the prices of tickets sold through their platform for each final in the competition since 2012.

According to the figures, the average ticket price for this year’s Europa League final is £550, 158% more than the average over the previous four years (£213).

The second highest average ticket price was £277 for the 2013 final between Chelsea and Benfica.

“Despite English teams not doing so well as the Spanish clubs in Europe of late, they still generate a larger demand for tickets” says Ander Michelena CEO of Ticketbis.net.  “If we consider the last five Europa League finals, you’ll see that the most expensive prices are found for the matches that involve two Premier League teams, Chelsea and Liverpool.”

The ticketing company has found that Premier League teams generally generate more international pull than other clubs, and that fans from countries such as the Russia, the US, and Japan usually spend more on tickets for important finals.

The highest ticket price for this year’s final, so far, was paid by a buyer in Russia at £2,335. On the other hand, some fans seek bargains. A few lucky fans from Poland were able to secure their tickets for no more than £18.

This year’s final also has a wider international appeal than ever thanks to Liverpool’s participation. The data shows that fans from 31 countries have purchased tickets for the 2016 final on the open market – a significant increase from last year’s final, which attracted 18 nationalities.

Demand for the Liverpool vs Sevilla showdown has been highest amongst fans from the UK, Germany and the US.
