Mexico's Unbeaten Run At The Azteca: Can England Finally End It?
Mexico have never lost a World Cup match at the Estadio Azteca. In ten matches across three tournaments, dating back to 1970, they have achieved eight wins, two draws and no defeats. England are set to play El Tricolor at the Azteca on Sunday night, with plenty of opportunities to bet on Mexico vs England, and Thomas Tuchel’s side will be hoping to change that pattern.
The Azteca is a forbidding place to play. It sits at 2,200 metres above sea level, holds more than 87,000 supporters and has hosted World Cup football on three separate occasions, the first time any stadium in history has done that. Mexico are the home side at the most storied ground in the game.
A record built across three tournaments
Javier Aguirre’s side swept through the 2026 group stage with three wins and no goals conceded, the first time Mexico have achieved a clean sweep of all three group matches in their World Cup history. A 3-0 win over the Czech Republic completed that run and left little doubt about how difficult they are to break down when playing on this ground.
Only twice in all-time Azteca history have visiting sides beaten Mexico there in any competitive context. The most recent was a World Cup qualifying defeat in September 2013 to Honduras.
The altitude problem
The Azteca does not just have the crowd and the history behind it. At 2,200 metres above sea level, it is the highest venue at this World Cup. Reduced oxygen availability at that altitude accelerates muscle fatigue and compresses sprint output. The physical cost falls most heavily on visiting sides who have not had weeks to acclimatise. Mexico train and play club football at this elevation. England does not.
Tuchel’s squad will have a few days to prepare, at most. That is not enough for the body to adapt properly. The altitude is a structural advantage for Mexico, not a marginal one.
England’s case
Tuchel’s side have done enough to earn the right to compete here. England came through Group L as winners, with a 4-2 victory over Croatia, a goalless draw with Ghana, and a 2-0 win over Panama. The squad has a settled look under Tuchel that it has rarely had in recent tournaments.
None of that cancels out the altitude or the Azteca crowd. But England have the defensive solidity to sit deep if they need to, and Tuchel has shown he will adjust his shape when the match demands it. Keeping the game tight in the opening exchanges and managing the physical load before the legs start to feel the altitude is the realistic path to staying in it.
What has to happen first
Both the Three Lions and El Tricolor have advanced and meet in the last 16 at the Azteca. England will face a record that has stood for 56 years, so will have their work cut out, and you can track England’s chances in the UK football odds. Mexico have gone nine World Cup matches at this ground without a defeat. The last side to win there in any competitive context was Honduras, in a 2013 World Cup qualifier.
