SPORTBIZ Europe Brings Together Industry Leaders in Barcelona

The fifth edition of SPORTBIZ Europe, one of the most prominent sports business conferences globally, concluded last Friday bringing together top sports industry leaders.

Over four days in Barcelona, executives from major sports organisations such as the NBA, Bundesliga, Euroleague, FIFA, the Olympic Games and FIBA gathered to share their knowledge and insights.

Organised by Good Morning Sports, with the Johan Cruyff Institute as the main partner, the event continues to expand annually, becoming an essential meeting point for professionals from around the world.

First Day of Conferences

The event kicked off with a welcome cocktail at the Hotel Pulitzer, followed by a full day of conferences. Barcelona Activa opened the day, highlighting the city’s role as a hub for entrepreneurship in the sports industry.

The morning session featured the roundtable “Shaping the Future of Sports”, with representatives from Euroleague, Atos, and APEX, as well as a presentation by Populous on how stadiums can generate revenue beyond matchdays.

Following this, FIFA, FIBA, and OneFootball outlined their digital strategies, while G2 Esports, Danone, and Udinese discussed their sponsorship models in an increasingly dynamic market.

The morning concluded with a discussion led by the Johan Cruyff Institute on mental health in sports, an often-overlooked aspect. The panel included Heather Fisher, a rugby player who has been an inspirational figure for women in sports, and Matilda Mayne, who is involved in promoting education and personal development among young athletes through ‘The True Athlete.’

One of the most anticipated moments was a presentation by Sharon Fuller, Head of Content for the NBA in Europe, who outlined the league’s strategy for connecting with fans outside the United States.

The day concluded with an engaging panel where Euroleague, Real Betis and the Olympic Games discussed how they are creating deeper fan experiences through sustainability initiatives, such as Forever Green.

The final session of the day was led by Leandro Petersen from the Argentine Football Association (AFA), who detailed the commercial growth of the AFA since 2017.

A Content-Packed Second Day

The second day began with the B-step showcase, highlighting success stories of startups supported by Barcelona Activa. This was followed by a presentation from Barcelona Sports Hub on its strategy to foster sportech through entrepreneurship, exemplified by success stories like Everesting.

Later in the day, tech giant Google delivered a session on cybersecurity in sports before the Bundesliga gave one of the most anticipated presentations on fan engagement, showcasing how the league has excelled in fostering relationships with its fans.

Finally, Sevilla FC and Juventus shared their approaches to innovation and data analysis to enhance the fan experience, before an inspiring presentation by 4-3-3. Lucas Bugter, Director of Business Development, explained how the platform has become a leader in the football world, thanks to the quality and originality of its content.

The Closing: Copa América and FC Barcelona

The last day of the conference included visits to FC Barcelona’s interactive museum, the innovative center The Venue Barcelona (which included a tour of the Montjuic Olympic Stadium), and the Copa América fan zone. These activities not only enriched the participants’ experience but also reinforced Barcelona’s position as the sports business capital of Europe.
