UEFA Launches Groundbreaking Joint Study On Player Load

UEFA has announced the launch of a new initiative, supported by the European Club Association (ECA), European Leagues and FIFPRO Europe, aimed at further defining the concept of ‘load’ in elite European men’s and women’s football, as well as understanding its associated impact where needed.

Addressing the complex and long-term aspects of load, the study will adopt a scientific, robust and data-driven approach in two primary phases, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy and reliability.

The initial phase will aim to define what the term ‘load’ means to stakeholders, including clubs, players, coaches, medical staff and other relevant groups identified by a panel of independent experts, in a bid to better assess associated factors, including different types of injuries, performance levels and player welfare.

This will be followed by a detailed analysis of historical data, assessing regulatory and calendar changes, as well as technical and performance trends over time. Consideration will be given to the impact such changes and trends may or may not have had in relation to player injuries, performance levels and player welfare.

The collaborative effort will be performed through contributions from leading, independent experts in relevant fields, ensuring a comprehensive, holistic and multidisciplinary approach.

Peer-reviewed scientific papers and practical recommendations will be produced, offering guidance to those responsible for decision-making in competition areas and in developing policies able to mitigate the influences of different aspects of load.

This initiative from UEFA forms a central component, alongside focussed engagement through other platforms, of the joint commitment by UEFA, the ECA, European Leagues and FIFPRO Europe to safeguard the game and players’ welfare.
