VALD’s Latest Innovation Is A Handheld Dynamometer Named DynaMo

Global health and sports tech company VALD has launched a handheld dynamometer and inclinometer named DynaMo that performs more than 300 strength and range of motion tests.

Aimed at physiotherapists and exercise professionals worldwide, DynaMo utilises Near-Field Communication technology to connect a range of smart attachments that allow users to capture objective data that help inform decision-making around performance and rehabilitation.

With time lost to injury one of the most significant recurring costs to any professional club, DynaMo is designed to the guesswork out of common football injuries such as hamstring and adductor issues.

VALD’s Chief Strategy Officer and co-founder Sam James says the company was determined not to compromise on DynaMo’s key features.

“We wanted to design a modern dynamometer without compromise and we realised there were a handful of key areas we could make major improvements in – particularly around attachments and the way the data is displayed,” James said.

“We thought about how many tests a modern exercise professional needs to perform and we came up with five smart attachments that all use NFC technology to automatically connect to the device.”

With DynaMo capable of performing hundreds of tests, James says the dynamometer was designed for the fewest number of attachments to perform the largest range of tests possible.

“We thought about what the industry most needed and we really tried to narrow the workflow so that practitioners wouldn’t have to switch out attachments all the time,” James said.

“We also wanted to move away from the sort of dynamometers that show data on an antiquated screen, so DynaMo displays data on an OLED screen on the device, as well as in a mobile app for iOS and Android that integrates with our centralised data platform, VALD Hub.”

VALD’s Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Laurie Malone says the launch of DynaMo aligns with one of the company’s core strategies of democratising musculoskeletal technology by making it more accessible and affordable to a broader range of practitioners, and providing industry professionals with validated objective data.

“Our technologies don’t define injury risk, but what they do is provide quantifiable objective data that clubs can use to better inform their own decision-making,” Malone said.

“What that means in simple terms is that clubs can take the data captured by VALD systems and use it for longitudinal reporting and analysis to track how players are performing over the course of a season.”
