One of the biggest clubs in Serie A and most historic clubs in Europe, AS Roma, certainly is an iconic presence on the football landscape.
However, even the most ardent supporter of i Lupi would have been surprised to hear that their relevance on the global scale rose overnight, with an extra 2.1 million people searching for the Italian club on Google recently. And it’s all down to one photo that has been circulating on social media, showing Kim Kardashian wearing an AS Roma shirt as she goes about her business.
Snapped by paparazzi not long after getting out of her car in a car park, football fans across the world have been resharing the image, causing great debate and discussion about how or why one of the most famous people on the planet has ended up wearing the shirt of AS Roma, who, until last season’s European Conference League win, hadn’t won a major trophy for more than a decade.
Managed by Jose Mourinho, AS Roma is no stranger to the biggest names in the world associating with their club, but the fact that Kim Kardashian had found a rare Diadora-sponsored replica jersey from the 1997/98 season, has only added to the bizarre discourse around the photo.
Kim Kardashian has an estimated 342.3 million followers across her social media channels, dwarfing AS Roma in that regard, despite them partnering with Snapchat in 2019. Unlike their weekend defeat to league leaders Napoli, the result of this photo was very positive for the club from the Italian capital. A surge in Google searches for the club saw many people discovering them for the first time all over the world, which is sure to be converted into commercial markets in the coming days and weeks.
The vintage jersey in question sells for around £200 now online, a number which could rise and rise. New Balance is Roma’s current kit supplier and so won’t be able to remake this Diadora number, but could see a potential rise in shirt sales itself as the football club feels the influence of Kardashian’s co-sign.
On the pitch, The Punter’s Page has Roma, currently 6th in Serie, as well in the race for a Champions League spot this season. Despite trailing some of their rivals and being well behind the runaway leaders Napoli, Mourinho has continued to improve the club’s fortunes and their presence off the pitch also continues to rise. The signing of Pablo Dybala has helped both causes too, with the household name and World Cup winner netting 10 times for the club in his debut season at Roma since signing from Juventus.
