Maheta’s appointment will ensure that the PFA is able to help steer the work of the global players’ union on behalf of members at a time of significant change across the world game.

Global union co-ordination has continued to progress and has been formalised through initiatives such as the recent ground-breaking agreement between FIFPRO and the World Leagues Forum (WLF), the global leagues’ body, to work together collectively to contribute to the strengthening, viability and growth of the football industry.

Speaking on his appointment, Molango said: “On behalf of the PFA and our members, I’m pleased to have taken up these new roles with FIFPRO.

“It is vital that player unions work together effectively to ensure that there is a united global voice on the issues that matter to members. FIFPRO play a key role in bringing unions and players together to provide that voice and it’s important that the PFA plays a significant role in shaping that.

“Those partnerships with other unions and player associations are something that I have prioritised since joining the PFA, not just within football but also with other major player unions like the NFLPA.

“It has been really encouraging to hear how well respected the PFA is internationally and how keen others are to learn about our work, but there is also so much we can take from others on how to continue to modernise and best represent the interests of our members across a wide range of issues.

Maheta replaces Bobby Barnes on the FIFPRO global and European boards. Bobby steps down after 14 years of service.
